The Elfiq Link Balancer’s iDNS feature available on all models enables organizations to proactively balance inbound traffic requests coming into an Intelligent_DNS_iDNS-1 organization. iDNS is commonly used to balance key services to ensure 100% availability such as roaming client VPNs, web-based applications such as transactional sites and web-based email and SMTP email traffic.

The iDNS module performs this task by intercepting traffic requests for desired services and returning the guest the link information which is optimal for its request.

By design, iDNS is not a full DNS service and this approach has the advantage that you do not have to migrate your DNS domains to support a multi-homed network and greatly reduces installation time and planning. Should the Elfiq Link Balancer lose power, the LAN Failsafe feature will ensure that traffic flows to the original DNS services since they were not altered.

The iDNS module’s configuration is very granular, enabling customized balancing configurations for each service balanced by iDNS. For example, SMTP and VPN services can have different use of preferred links and algorithms based on organizational policies.
